Building a more informed & engaged city

Mayor Bob Cashell of The City of Reno has issued a proclamation for Reno’s first Hack4Reno event. The document does a great job of explaining why Hack4Reno exists and we’re very excited to be putting on the event.

There tends to be some reservations within tech/startup communities to work together with their cities but this event would not be possible on the scale that we have achieved without our involvement with our local government.

Hack4Reno is a completely open source event that is currently being planned and executed openly on Github and after our event we will be going through the repositories and wikis to clean up and provide a template for other cities to do what we are currently doing for the Reno area. Follow along with the updates on Twitter @hack4reno or the organizers @elskwid, @yodasan, @ kristyfifelski or myself, @colinloretz.

Pretty awesome that you got the Mayor on board! What was the outcome of all this hackery?

We had 70 developers and designers participate to create 15 apps! Only a couple are in use right now but it was a very good turnout and everyone who participated left feeling very empowered. I think the next one will have result in more usable apps.
